Sudden Passing of Brian Smith

Saskatchewan Artistic Swimming loses one of our own

Announcement from Kathleen Reynolds, SAS Executive Director

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the sudden passing of Brian Smith.

Brian was a member of the Estevan Mermaids Club and Saskatchewan Artistic Swimming. He first got involved in the sport in 2006-07 as a club volunteer along with his wife (Brenda Lyons) to support their daughter (Tess Rensby) who was already an active artistic swimming athlete. Both he and Brenda in their second season began actively coaching for the club. And in 2009-10 Brian chose to expand his volunteer involvement further by taking his judging certification to become a judge and eventually a referee.

Brian had a huge influence on the Estevan Mermaids athletes and anyone watching could see the enjoyment he had being involved with them and eventually all athletes across the province. Brian moved to Vernon, BC for the 2018-19 season however continued to be a member with SAS as he travelled back to Saskatchewan to assist with refereeing one or two competitions each year.

Saskatchewan Artistic Swimming and many of our members will tremendously miss Brian and his wonderful happy personality. We extend our sincerely condolences to Brenda, Tess and Zack for their loss and hope the many fond memories they each have will help them through this trying time.
